Highlights of Karnataka players in Parsvnath Commonwealth Chess Championship 2007:

A total of 10 players from Karnataka participated in the Parsvnath Commonwealth Chess Championship 2007. They include
1.D V Prasad
2.M S Thej Kumar
3.Stany G A
4.Girish A Koushik
5.Adith Jagadish
6.Navalgund Niranjan
7.Gahan M G
8.Viani Anotonio D’cunha
9.Nihal Manjunath
10.Shristy J Shetty


International Master D V Prasad had a good start maintained his opposition against top players such as GM Abhijeet Gupta, GM Deepan Chakravarthy and also defeated players like Imocha Laisram, K N Gopal etc…
The Second half proved to be a bit bad for The IM.

M S Thej Kumar of Karnataka finally obtained 1 GM+IM Norm!
He played a fantastic chess in this toughest field!
He completed his IM Norm at the end of 8th round.
And completed a GM Norm at the end of 9th round!
Chess India and Belgaum Chess Congratulates him
And finally he also came in the prize list!
He was lucky enough to bag 15th ! place and 10,000/- in pocket!
 with 7 points

Stany G A played it very steadily to hold great players such as P Karthikeyan, Tanveer M, M Gillani, Imocha Laisram etc… all rated above 2200 and also defeated players such as Wajih Nassir, etc….
He finished with 5.5/10 As he was unlucky in the second half to lose with Aswin Jayaram and Kiran Manisha Mohanti which reduced the chances for a medal…He increased some 40 points….

Girish A Koushik bagged silver medal to end the tourney with 5.5/.10 points! Belgaum Chess And Chess India congratulates the World Under 10 Champion…….

Adith Jagadish also had steady performance with 4.5/10. He may be increasing some rating points as he drew with Sohan Phadke, Sagar Shah rated above 2200…..

Navalgund Niranjan:
As usual he too had a good performance. He missed good chances in the tournament as he had a better position against IM Ratnakaran but went for a win at the end where it was draw and finally messed up!
Then Lost to Imocha Laisram in a opposite bishop ending being a pawn up blundered in a time pressure!
And he also drew with Good players such as K N Gopal , Abhay T,
V S Negi rated above 2200 and his scored more against Quinn Joseph of England etc and he increased some 15-20 rating points!


Gahan M G lost his early rounds with Nisha and Sohan Phadke but picked up well in the middle of the tourney. He was 5/7 which proved to be very vital for chances of gold medal in U-14 category! He got his breakup after winning with Phobalan and Praful Mehta rated above 2200 and Also fancied National U-13 Champion Vidit Santosh Gujarati rated 2315 was one of his victim! The game between Gahan and GM Deepan Chakravarthy attracted huge crowd as the game was quite interesting for some stages.
But finally was won by GM. His loses against high rated after his 5/7 proved to be bad after 5/10! He lost to FM Nitin GM Deepan and Arjun Tiwari!



Viani had a slow but good start with FM Islam Aminiset of Bangladesh and Abhishekh Das which ended in a draw and later scored tremendous upsets like beating Sohan Phadke 2254,Praful Mehta 2207, Aditya Udeshi 2355, and later lost 4 games continuously which did not bring him a medal in his U-12 category. He had bright chances if he had scored just an half more!
His loses with Ratnakaran, Tunveer Gillani , Rishpal Singh and Sagar Shah proved to be less for a medal. He won the final round with WFM Harris Rebecca to finish with 5/10

Nihal Manjunath also lost his early games like Gahan but he played well in the second half. His win against V S Negi gave bright chances for a medal in U-12 category but he lost to Padmini Rout in the final round!
He may be increasing some 20 rating points

Last but not the least Shristy J Shetty bagged silver medal in U-14 Girls Category! Belgaum Chess and Chess India congratulates her!
She played the second half quite well by beating 2000 above rated players.
Her final winning moment of the medal included the final game against M V Laxmi narayana who blundered a piece at the end which made her medal confirm……
